Visiting Takumi – Kutani ware The world of Kutani ware drawn with a unique sense

January 19, 2017 We visited Sachiko Ide, who is performing at Aoyama Square.

Kutani ware: Sachiko Ide

Kutani ware is a traditional craft of Ishikawa Prefecture. It is basic to draw lines by Kuresu on a bluish base and paint with a color called Kutani Gosai.

There are many craftsmen and writers, and last year we celebrated the 360th anniversary of kutani ware.

How did you get into this world?

When I was a student who liked to draw

Mr. Ide has loved drawing since he was a student. He enjoyed a lot of time sketching and designing.

Mr. Ide entered the world of Kutani ware after he got married and had a child. When I had finished raising children, I decided to go to a training center of Kutani ware that I wanted to go to at one time.

While actually drawing at the training center, he wanted to continue after graduation, and while working as a housewife, she continued to decorate.

However, I didn’t do decorations as my main job, so I was designing between time and holding solo exhibitions.

At that time, he was asked, “Why don’t you try to get a qualification as a traditional craftsman?” and decided to work as a craftsman of Kutani ware.

Features of the work

Sketching natural things

He likes to draw, and he sketches and expresses familiar things.

For example, I design various things such as sketching “Hyon tree” blooming in the garden of the house and expressing it with decorations.

In particular, ide-san honed his skills on his own after graduating from the training center because he did not apprentice to kutani ware craftsmen.

Therefore, compared to other craftsmen, he has a stronger world view and expresses Kutani ware that other people do not have.

– Cute accessories ~

Kaere Figurine

Because kutani gosai is used, it is a color of Kutani ware, but there is a taste different from other Kutani ware somewhere.

Indian Necklace

A necklace designed based on a sketch when I traveled to India. It is very cute and cohesive.

Various shapes of obi-do

While incorporating traditional classic patterns, ide’s world view is included. There is a deep taste.

Ide’s Future Goals

Although there are many twists and turns, he says that the only thing that has come this far is because there were people who supported me. That’s why Ide-san also said that he wants to be someone who can bridge the bridge so that young people today can go out and work.

Currently, there are 24 women who are involved in Kutani ware. However, because I am active while working as a housewife, it is a fact that I have not been able to do business outside easily.

Now that women are also working and it has become a natural era, they want to spread the same way in the world of craftsmen.

Making works from now on

When asked what his goal is for his work, he said that he also wanted to value the traditional patterns of Kutani ware.

Kutani ware is a traditional craft with a history of more than 360 years since its opening. This continued means that a lot of works have been produced for that long.

If you study the patterns of successive craftsmen, you will be deep and it is not easy to elucidate everything.

Up until now, most of my worldviews have been imagined, but from now on, you said that you want to be able to express your own world view while incorporating old patterns.

Mr. Ide, who spoke with us this time, is currently exhibiting at the special exhibition “Women’s Traditional Craftsman Exhibition – With Artists” (~1/25) currently being held at Aoyama Square.

Ide’s workshop “Kobo Hyonoki” is distributed on facebook, so please see here as well.

In Korinbo, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, they also have painting and pottery experiences, so please contact “Kobo Hyonnoki” before going to visit.
