During the exhibition, art fans, gallerists, curators, collectors, buyers, and other creative stakeholders visited, and many new talents have expanded their activities through encounters with visitors. At the end of the exhibition, each jury prize, semi-grand prix, and grand prix will be awarded to excellent works, including the Audience Award determined by the vote of the visitors and the Best Sales Award given to the creators who sold the most works, and will provide opportunities to present the work.

EXHIBITION

Natsumi Araki Curator, Associate Professor, Tokyo University of the Arts
All expression activities are not made up of the expression person alone. See, listen, buy, fund, mentor, criticize, spread… We need the attention and support of all people around expression. I want the expressionr to always be open to others to the outside world. SICF, where people across genres and attributes gather, will be a unique opportunity to connect expressors and society. I’m hoping for a fresh encounter.

Shinji Ohmaki, Artist

Following on from last year, we decided to do the second screening. I feel that spiral competitions are competitions that allow you to present and exhibit freely in a wide range of competitions. The exhibition space is limited, but I expect works that have the potential to develop one after another from there, rather than works that end in that space. Regardless of age, I hope that you will be able to meet works that make you feel more freedom of expression. I look forward to the opportunity to talk to you.

Born in Gifu City in 1971. He attempts to create a physical space-time to approach the ambiguous and elusive “existence” and develops production activities. The main works are “Liminal Air space-time” (2011-), which visualizes the disappearance of materiality and the irrationality of self-originality by floating soft cloth, “Echoes Infinity” (2002 ~), a work that composes patterns and letters with various backgrounds to create a vivid color space as a memory of the place, Memorial, a work that attempts to regenerate the place and memory by a large amount of soap bubbles
Rebirth” (2008〜) and the like. His main exhibitions include “Simple Form: Where Does Beauty Come from” Mori Art Museum (2016), “Liminal Air Fluctuation – existence” Hermes Sable Store (Paris) (2015), “Louis Vuitton 2016-17 FW PARIS MEN’S COLLECTION” André Citroën Park, Paris, “Proof of Existence” Hakone Open Air Museum (2012), “Asia Pacific Triennale 2009” Queensland Art Gallery (Brisbane), “Aichi Triennale 2016: Rainbow Caravan Sarai”, “Yokohama Triennale 2008”, etc. He has received the 8th Enku Prize (2015), the 27th Takashimaya Art Award (2016), etc.

Ikuko Kato Spiral Curator
From this year, the Exhibition Division Grand Prix was honored as a solo exhibition at the atrium, a space that symbolizes spirals. SICF23 is an exhibition for each booth, but there will be a need for the necessity to present “this work here and now”. On the other hand, SICF is not only a competition, but also a place to meet many customers. I hope that SICF will open up to society and constantly evolve, creating rich activities that are not bound by existing methods of expression and genre.

I think that it is this market division that the expression of the author is linked to commercial value in some form and established as a thing. However, the product power and quality of the thing are of course very important, but I was keenly aware in the last examination that the person who sees that it is made to present a new way of thinking and the ideal form in the present world cannot resist the charm. I think that the current market requires proposals that have commercial value but incorporate the author’s unique perspectives and thoughts. I am looking forward to meeting such things from now on.

He has hosted fabric brand OTTAIPNU since 2004. Focusing on colorful printed fabrics, we have developed a collection full of charm that the fabric originally has. In addition to his own brand, he also released textile products from various brands in Japan and overseas, such as Marimekko, Camper and UNIQLO. In addition to textiles, we are developing designs centered on pattern design for various scenes such as furniture and architectural spaces.

In order to cope with the rapid population growth of humankind, the machinery industry capable of mass production was indispensable, but I think that the creators of today’s overflowing world are in a different situation where they have to seriously think about “what we will make in the future”. That’s why it’s shallow to say that you don’t make things, and I think that the joy of living with “beautiful things” will feed your heart. I would like to think together with the creators through SICF what is “beautiful things” that move people’s hearts.

This is the 23rd SICF. The market division newly established in 2021, thanks to the first time, various encounters were born thanks to you, and many works left the nest. The work that I worked on creates and colors someone’s daily life. I feel that the number of opportunities to experience pure pleasure proportional to the weight of responsibility directly has decreased recently. What kind of light does your work emit in a different environment than usual, and who will receive that thought? Please use SICF as a place to answer each other about future work creation.
