【News Release Details】

Getac today announced that Getac’s K120, an environmentally resistant tablet, was used in conjunction with LeaderTek’s 3D laser scanner, 3D point cloud processing software, to scan and create 3D models in the digital preservation of Taiwan’s historic building, Shikako Tenhougu.

Due to the subtropical climate in Taiwan, existing cultural properties are in an environment that can be easily damaged due to natural disasters and human contact, and among them, various historical buildings and crafts are still frequently exposed to the hands of Taiwanese local people at “Deer Port Tianhougu”, which is designated as a historic site by the Taiwanese government.

“Taiwan is always exposed to natural disasters, and the urgency of digital preservation of cultural properties is becoming more urgent,” said Chia-Wen Liu, head of management of “Deer Port Tianhougu Shrine,” said Chen Chun-Yu, a researcher at the Cultural Asset Conservation Research Center of the Ministry of Culture, Taiwan. Currently, the number of places requiring maintenance and restoration work continues to increase, and for example, the phoenix mikoshi used for the tour of the ancestors has been damaged by a history of nearly a century. We want to digitally preserve the phoenix mikoshi with the latest modern technology, 3D scanning, so that the founder can ride this majestic mikoshi again.”

“By using Getac’s environmentally resistant tablets with our 3D laser scanners, we were able to produce a fully digitized model of Shikako TianhouGu, which could be used as a reference for accurate restoration of details when maintaining historical ruins in the future,” said Yuo Liang-Chu, head of LeaderTek. “In previous general PC performance, it was barely possible to scan 20 locations a day, but getac’s K120 model can scan up to 70 locations a day, which can improve the efficiency of 3D modeling by as much as 250%. “The high performance and long battery life allows us to see scan results in the field while running for a long time, making it the perfect platform for working in outdoor environments.” It was said.

“As proved by the high-performance and robust K120 model, technology increases the potential to preserve the history of the past when it intersects with its historical heritage,” said Rick Hwang, head of Getac. The 3D scanning application is a good example of how the K120 can be used in field work and how hardware and software technologies from us and our partners can seamlessly integrate work. With this case, we can extend it to other industrial needs, such as environmental measurement of factories, plant monitoring, and map creation.” It says.
